Sonnedix acquires 136 megawatts of operational renewables in Spain

The company has also completed the purchase of another 26 megawatt portfolio and commissioned a 50 megawatt plant

British renewable energy producer Sonnedix has closed a deal with Qualitas Energy to purchase a 136 megawatt solar photovoltaic portfolio, entirely located in our country. The 169 plants that make up the Spanish asset management company’s portfolio, specialised in renewable energy, energy transition and sustainability, became operational between 2007-2014, and fall under the Spanish regulatory framework.

This transaction brings Sonnedix's operating capacity in Spain to a total of more than 770 megawatts in renewable energy, in addition to more than 850 megawatts in projects currently under construction and at other stages of development. These figures put Spain - where the company has been present since its inception in 2009 - in a prominent position in its portfolio, which has a total capacity of eight gigawatts in ten countries.

Consolidation as an independent producer
Sonnedix CEO Axel Thiemann described the operation as “one of the most important in recent years, which undoubtedly reinforces our positioning and consolidation in Spain as a leading independent renewable energy producer. This acquisition demonstrates our capacity and dedication to powering the energy transition in the country”, he added.

For his part, founding partner and CEO of Qualitas Energy, Íñigo Olaguíbel, explained that, “We are proud to continue helping to consolidate the Spanish energy market”, and said that this operation “demonstrates our purchasing, financing, and operational optimization capabilities, and allows us to further strengthen our business strategy”.

Other operations
Just ten days earlier, Sonnedix had acquired another operational portfolio in Spain. On this occasion, the company acquired three projects, comprising a total of eleven solar photovoltaic plants, with a total of 26 megawatts of regulated capacity in Aragón, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha and Murcia. Collectively, these plants are capable of generating 44 gigawatt hours per year, which is equivalent to the electricity consumed by more than 13,000 households.

Underlining the importance of Spain in Sonnedix's portfolio, the company commissioned a solar photovoltaic plant in Los Frailes (Badajoz) in December, with a 50 megawatt capacity and making the project its largest to date built in our country. Located on a 111 hectare plot, it will produce around 102 gigawatts hours per year.
