Endesa is to invest 9.6 billion euros until 2027, and will begin with the purchase of Acciona's hydroelectric plants.
The Enel Group has presented its 2025-2027 strategic plan, in which Endesa is to receive a large part of the investments. The Spanish company has given details of this number, which totals 9.6 billion euros in our country and constitute a record investment.
Tackling the challenges of the energy transition is the main goal of the new strategic plan. To do this, the company will invest 4 billion euros in its electricity grid, 45% more than in the 2024-2026 plan. It will also increase its investment in renewable energy to 3.7 billion, with a major shift away from solar to other higher-value assets such as hydro and wind.
1 billion euros in hydropower
In fact, the announced purchase of 34 Acciona hydroelectric plants in Spain came ahead of the announcement of the strategic plan itself, which includes this investment, valued at 1 billion euros. The operation, led by its subsidiary Endesa Generación, consists of the purchase of 100% of the share capital of Corporación Acciona Hidráulica.
Located in Aragon, Soria, Valencia and Navarre, the hydroelectric plants have a total installed capacity of 626 MW. Most of them have modulation capability, and in 2023 they generated 1.3 terawatt-hours of energy. This acquisition sees Endesa's hydro portfolio grow to a capacity of 5.3 gigawatts.
Moving the energy transition forward
The strategic plan aims to take advantage of all market opportunities to move the energy transition forward. The investment, which will be increased by 8% compared to the previous strategic plan, will serve to boost clean electrification, reduce foreign energy dependence and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The objectives of the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (Plan Nacional Integrado de Energía y Clima, PNIEC), presented by the Spanish government in September, have been taken into account in the preparation of this document. Among other needs, the Spanish electricity grid will have to grow by another 55 terawatt-hours to reach 307 terawatt-hours by 2030 and meet the estimated demand for that year.
Endesa's CEO, José Bogas, states that this is a key moment "for the achievement of the energy transition objectives set for 2030. Regulations must support us in achieving them. This new strategic plan contains the basis for seizing the greatest possible opportunities in this context. And it provides Endesa with ample financial capacity to accelerate and increase the investments needed to do so. We are, in short, in the best possible industry and at the best possible time."
