Plenitude builds largest project worldwide in Extremadura

Elevion, Verbund and DWS also announce new renewable investments in Spain

Plenitude has started construction on its largest project to date worldwide, located in Solana de los Barros (Badajoz). This is the Renopool project, a solar PV installation that will have a capacity of 330 megawatts peak and will generate up to 600 gigawatt hours per year. The work is scheduled for completion by 2025.

Construction companies OHLA, Sacyr and Sarpel are in charge of the turnkey project execution. It will consist of seven solar PV parks and an electrical substation, and will be equipped with bifacial modules, solar tracking systems and central inverters. Connection to the electricity grid will be via infrastructure consisting of three connection nodes and a high-voltage line shared with other developers.

Commitment to the Spanish renewables industry
Stefano Goberti, CEO of the company owned by Italian energy company Eni, explained that this project “confirms our commitment to the Spanish renewable energy industry, where we have nearly 400 megawatts of wind and solar PV plants in operation, over 1,000 megawatts under construction and more than 2,000 megawatts in the pipeline”.

Referring to its other business lines, Goberti said that “thanks to our integrated business model, we are also growing in the country's retail market, with over 300,000 customers, and we have recently started to expand our network of electric vehicle charging points on the Iberian Peninsula as well”.

New initiatives by foreign investors
The Spanish renewables industry continues to attract new investors. This is the case with the Dutch group Elevion, which has announced its arrival in Spain by establishing its subsidiary Belectric. The new company will address the entire value chain for solar energy and energy storage projects. To support its landing in the Spanish market, Elevion has reached an agreement with Murcia-based developer Navitacum, which has been integrated into Belectric and will operate under the new brand.

The Austrian company Verbund, which has extensive experience in solar energy and wind power in Spain, has also announced an agreement with the Spanish company Capital Energy to develop pumped-storage hydroelectric plants in Spain. Together, the two companies are already considering constructing two hydropower plants with a combined capacity of around 830 megawatts peak.

Another significant investment was the purchase of a solar energy portfolio, with a capacity of 147 megawatts peak, announced by the German asset manager DWS. The three plants, hitherto owned by the Spanish group X-Elio, are located in Medina de las Torres (Badajoz) and came into operation in mid-2023.
