Stellantis boosts self-consumption at Spanish plants

It will install wind farms in Zaragoza and solar PV panels on the roof of its facility in Vigo

Motor vehicle manufacturer Stellantis, owner of brands like Peugeot, Citröen, Fiat and Opel, has taken stock of its results for the past year at its three plants in Spain.

The Figueruelas factory (Zaragoza), which broke its record for electric vehicle production in 2023 by exceeding 44,000 units, will become the largest self-consumption plant in Spain next year. It will also be a benchmark for the entire automotive group thanks to the installation of wind farms to complement the solar PV panels that have been supplying a third of its electricity needs since 2021.

Battery assembly
Total production at Stellantis Zaragoza has reached 365,739 vehicles, a similar amount to the number produced in 2022. The plant has also had a battery assembly workshop to cover its own needs since 2021. From next year, it will cover 80% of its electricity needs by using wind turbines, in line with the company's strategic decarbonisation plan, called Dare Forward 2030.

Meanwhile, the Vigo plant will inaugurate the largest rooftop solar PV self-consumption facility in Spain in 2024. This project, which will cover 14% of its electricity needs, was launched in 2023 as part of the Carbon Net Zero 360 strategy, with which the factory plans to completely eliminate its carbon footprint by 2038.

Electricity needs
Production in Vigo grew in turn by 31.5% in 2023 to 531,732 units. 13% of this total are 100% electric vehicles, such as the Peugeot e-2008. Electric vehicle production increased by a total of 21% compared to 2022. The plant is also a benchmark for the production of commercial and multi-purpose vehicles, producing both electric and non-electric versions.

Stellantis completed the second phase of its solar PV plant in Madrid in 2023. Together with the first, installed in 2021, it already covers up to 35% of its electricity needs. The Madrid plant, which produces the Citroën C4 and C4 X and their 100% electric versions on a world-exclusive basis, also increased production in 2023. In this case, production increased by 29% to 105,830 units. 24% of the total were 100% electric vehicles, whose production increased by 9%.
