The British company already has 15 operational projects in Spain, with a combined capacity of 691 megawatts.

Renewable energy company Matrix Renewables has connected two new solar projects to the Spanish electricity grid. These are Cruz de los Caminos and Piedra de la Sal, both located in the province of Cuenca. With the launch of this project, the British company now has a total of 15 interconnected projects in Spain, with a combined installed capacity of 691 megawatts.

Connecting these two new renewable projects to the grid strengthens Matrix Renewables’ strategy for growth and consolidation in Spain’s renewable energy market. Cruz de los Caminos and Piedra de la Sal achieved financial close in early 2025 and have a long-term PPA (power purchase agreement) with German pharmaceutical company Merck.

Global benchmark in renewables sector
Merck’s Associate Director for Energy Procurement, Laurent Villiers, highlighted that the collaboration with Matrix "is based on reliability, professionalism and ongoing support", and explained that the agreement has been made possible by factors such as "the transparency, responsiveness and shared commitment demonstrated throughout every phase of the partnership".

Matrix Renewables’ CEO and head of Europe and Latin America, Sergio Arbeláez, said this milestone helps to further cement the company’s position in the Spanish market, adding, "The grid connection of Cruz de los Caminos and Piedra de la Sal represents a new achievement for the company, just five years after its foundation" Indeed, according to Arbeláez "this milestone further strengthens our operations in Spain, a global benchmark in the renewable energy sector, and reflects our long-term commitment to this market."

Plant hybridisation
Meanwhile, Matrix continues to drive its hybridisation strategy forward for its current and future plants, which involves integrating energy storage systems and wind technology in order to optimise asset performance and provide greater flexibility to the grid. The company is developing stand-alone battery energy storage systems (BESS) as part of that strategy to build a balanced and diversified asset portfolio, capable of adapting to the changing needs of the electricity system and energy markets.

Matrix Renewables, established and backed by the global alternative asset manager TPG and its impact investment platform, currently has 15 operational projects in Spain, all of them in the solar photovoltaic field. It does in addition have three more solar projects under development and two ready to build, ten wind projects and 12 battery projects under development, plus one battery project ready to build.
