Renewable energy platform Matrix Renewables has opened Adelfa Solar, the fifth photovoltaic plant in a project in which the British company has invested €227 million. Like the other four plants that make up this cluster in the province of Palencia, Adelfa has a capacity of 50 megawatts, bringing the total to 250 megawatts.

The new facility is located in the town of Paredes de Nava. Together with the other four projects in Almendro, Baluarte, Bombarda and Retama, it highlights the importance of the role that  the province of Palencia plays for Matrix as one of Spain’s most strategic areas for the deployment of renewable energy.

Battery storage and hybridisation
Alongside its commissioning, there are other future ambitions for the cluster. Its developer is currently exploring the possibility of integrating battery storage systems into the project and potentially hybridising it with wind power. This initiative would give it flexibility and enable it to supply energy to the electricity grid 24 hours a day.

Sergio Arbeláez, CEO and head of the company in Europe and Latin America, says that the opening of Adelfa Solar represents “a milestone we are very proud of, both for Matrix Renewables and for Palencia. Our commitment to this region goes far beyond the energy we produce; it is a commitment to its people, its land and its future.”

Initiatives supporting the local area
Confirming Arbeláez’s remarks, the Palencia cluster, like Matrix’s renewable energy projects in general, is accompanied by initiatives that support the local area. For example, in this case a social impact programme has been developed in partnership with local secondary schools to educate pupils about the renewable energy sector. This has been carried out through content related to photovoltaic technology, environmental sustainability and the green economy.

In terms of employment, the company has supported training programmes aimed at people at risk of social exclusion in order to improve their employability, and some of the participants were hired for the construction of the photovoltaic cluster. There are also environmental initiatives, including a pilot project to monitor biodiversity and the implementation of regenerative grazing practices.
