MG to build first European mainland factory in Galicia
It will invest around EUR 200 million to begin production in 2028 and create around 2,000 jobs.
Chinese car manufacturer MG Motor, a subsidiary of SAIC Motor (Shanghai Automobile Industry Corporation), has chosen Galicia as the site for what will be its first production plant on the European mainland. The company expects the investment to be around EUR 200 million, and that the new facility will create around 2,000 jobs on the continent.
The new plant is set to begin operations in 2028, according to the company’s estimates, which put its production capacity at up to 120,000 vehicles a year. This operation forms part of MG’s long-term strategy for the European market, which involves manufacturing on the continent for local consumers. In fact, the Galician plant will also become a strategic hub for the brand’s next phase of growth in Europe.
R&D Activities
The facility will include facilities for vehicle research and development, advanced manufacturing, the supply of key components and smart logistics operations. The aim is to create a fully connected industrial ecosystem from start to finish.
The company will at the same time step up its collaboration with its European technology partners, research institutions and local suppliers to accelerate innovation in areas focused on the future of mobility, such as next-generation battery technologies, smart mobility systems and clean energy solutions.
100 million units sold worldwide
The announcement of the new factory comes in the same year that MG has sold its one-millionth vehicle in the European market and its 100 millionth worldwide. In addition to its model range, the company also boasts proprietary technology, such as the first mass-produced semi-solid-state battery, with which it aims to play a leading role in building a more sustainable mobility future.
William Wang, Managing Director, MG UK and Europe, says, “From technological innovation to localised manufacturing and R&D across Europe, backed by a truly global product range, MG continues to push the boundaries of what is possible, making advanced technology and sustainable mobility accessible to more people than ever before.”
