Trend Micro has opened a cybersecurity hub in Barcelona where it expects to employ 300 employees.
Specialising in cybersecurity, Trend Micro came into being in Japan with the aim of making the world a safer place in terms of exchanging digital information. In the company’s more than three decades of experience, it has researched and innovated with solutions that now use the most modern artificial intelligence techniques. Its cybersecurity platform is prepared to respond to the most powerful and dangerous threats to the integrity of the systems, applications and data used by millions of people and businesses every day.
Early last summer, Trend Micro opened a new office in Barcelona that will serve as a strategic hub for developing its European operations. The talent available in the city and the large presence of other companies in the industry have been determining factors in choosing the Catalan capital.

What has been the trajectory of Trend Micro’s Spanish subsidiary?
Trend Micro has had a presence in Spain for over two decades with its headquarters in Madrid, and from where it has developed sales and support activities for customers and partners throughout the country. Throughout these years, the Spanish subsidiary has supported companies with digital transformation, evolving from traditional endpoint protection to advanced solutions in the cloud, extended detection and response (XDR) and managed cybersecurity services. Opening a new hub in Barcelona represents a natural step in this evolution, reinforcing the company’s commitment to the Spanish and European market. The opening of the Barcelona hub means that Spain now has two strategic sites that fully complement each other.
Why did you choose Barcelona for your European cybersecurity hub?
Choosing Barcelona responds to a strategic vision of being at the heart of European innovation. Barcelona has established itself as one of the most important technology centres on the continent, with a business ecosystem that combines talent, connectivity and a dynamic community. According to recent data, Barcelona has 160 international technology hubs, which generate an economic impact of 2.8 billion euros and employ almost 35,000 professionals. This environment, together with institutional support from Barcelona City Council and the Barcelona Investment Office, has been decisive in Trend Micro choosing the city as its European base of operations, with the aim of boosting innovation, attracting international talent and strengthening the European cyber defence network.
How many people and what types of professionals will work at this centre?
Trend Micro’s goal is to exceed 300 employees at the Barcelona hub, with profiles in engineering, operations, technical support and business development areas, as well as threat intelligence specialists. The company will also maintain its headquarters in Madrid, where functions are concentrated as the operational and commercial centre for Spain and Portugal, offering support to customers, channels and technology partners. The team is in the midst of a growth phase to support the company’s expansion in Europe.
What are the objectives for the Barcelona hub?
The new Barcelona hub was created with the aim of promoting innovation in cybersecurity, attracting and training international talent and strengthening the European defence network against cyberthreats. The facility will house key engineering, operations, support and business development functions, and will also serve as a connection point with universities and other stakeholders in the Catalan cybersecurity ecosystem. In terms of investment, the company has not disclosed the annual budget for the project, but the opening is part of Trend Micro’s overall European expansion strategy to strengthen innovation and response capabilities with respect to the digital security challenges facing the continent.
You have strategic partnerships with the world’s IT giants and work for large companies. What are your customers’ profiles in Spain and what are their main needs?
In Spain, Trend Micro works with large and medium-sized companies in areas like banking, telecommunications, public administration and industrial solutions, as well as organisations operating in hybrid and multi-cloud environments. Customers demand solutions that enable them to protect themselves against increasingly sophisticated attacks, especially ransomware and advanced persistent threats. They also require comprehensive cloud security, agile incident detection and response through XDR technologies and managed services, as well as support for regulatory compliance and operational resilience. Trend Micro responds to these needs with a comprehensive offering that combines technology, threat intelligence and global expertise.
What is Spain’s role in the company strategy?
Spain plays a key role in Trend Micro’s European strategy. Opening the Barcelona hub consolidates Spain’s role as one of the main hubs for the company’s expansion on the continent, not only because of its location and connectivity, but also because of the quality of its talent and the maturity of its technology sector. Moreover, the dynamism of the cybersecurity industry in Catalonia, which amounted to a turnover of 1.473 billion euros in 2024 – 18.7% more than the previous year – makes Spain a strategic point for developing new solutions and attracting specialised talent. With this investment, Trend Micro is reaffirming its commitment to Europe and to strengthening the cybersecurity industry in Spain.
What are your next challenges?
Trend Micro’s key challenges include attracting and retaining highly skilled talent in an increasingly competitive industry. We also face the constant challenge of anticipating new forms of cyber attack, especially those driven by malicious use of artificial intelligence or supply chain attacks. Another key challenge will be to continue to innovate security solutions for cloud environments and hybrid architectures, offering customers comprehensive, agile and scalable protection. Furthermore, the aim is to consolidate the Barcelona hub as a European benchmark in research, development and innovation within cybersecurity, strengthening its role as a major player in defending the digital world.
