Uniqlo opens its first store in Madrid and its third in Barcelona

The Madrid store currently employs around 120 people, and the Diagonal in Barcelona has 65

Two years after opening their first Spanish outlet in Barcelona, Uniqlo has launched its first store in Madrid. Located at number 6 Calle Goya in a 19th-century building on the corner of Calle Serrano, the site has a retail area of 1,590 m² distributed over two floors, and is staffed by around 120 employees.

The remodeling of the premises took several months, after the close of the Jardín de Serrano shopping center which previously occupied the site. The new design combines the Japanese brand's hallmark pared-down look with the original features of the building itself, including skylights and a marble staircase. In addition, the first floor offers views over the courtyard on the interior of the block, with over 2,000 m² of gardens, including particularly chestnut, palm, laurel and Judas trees.

Two successful years
Kohsuke Kobayashi, Uniqlo Spain's operations manager, describes their arrival in the capital: “We are proud and very honored to continue expanding the Uniqlo brand in the Spanish market after two successful years during which the Spanish consumer has embraced our LifeWear philosophy. Our arrival in Madrid is an important milestone in our expansion strategy in Spain and Europe, and we are excited to see how the people of Madrid will integrate our functional quality apparel into their daily lives”.

Everything indicates that the city will welcome the Japanese brand with the same enthusiasm shown by Barcelona in September 2017 and by the public all over Spain on the online store. Over 900 people attended the pre-launch party, and more than 300 waited in line from seven in the morning on the day of the inauguration, October 17, to be the first to enter the new store.

Third store in Barcelona
While Madrid has had to wait two years to have its own Uniqlo store, Barcelona now has three, with the opening on October 30 – barely two weeks later – of its store at number 609 La Diagonal. This location has an area of 930 m² distributed over two floors, and employs a staff of 65.

Uniqlo's first Spanish store opened in Barcelona's Paseo de Gracia in September 2017, followed only two months later by the store in the Glòries shopping center.
